Following the release of pepper spray in the back stairwell of The Runcie Building, 22 students were taken to hospital following assessment on-site by doctors and para-medics. These students suffered symptoms which included minor breathing problems, coughing and sore eyes, leading in some cases, to nausea and headache. Students were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and all were released during the course of the afternoon.
A 12 year old boy was arrested on school site in possession of pepper spray. He is now under investigation by the police.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all students for the mature and sensible manner in which they co-operated throughout the incident.
Thanks also to the staff at the school and the emergency services who dealt with the incident.
